Emergency money was issued by the Swedish government to help fund the drawn-out wars with Russia, Poland, and Denmark (known as the "Great Northern War," 1700-1721). These small copper pieces were to substitute for silver in circulation so that the more valuable metal could remain in Carl XII's coffers to help fund the wars. Though the wars were soon lost and the currency plan ultimately flopped (holders of these coins were never able to exchange them for silver face value, as was intended), coin collectors have certainly benefitted from the many interesting variations on the obverse, ranging from Roman Gods to Swedish and Latin epigrammatic inscriptions. Each copper coin here weighs approximately 4.3 grams.
